Understanding and resolving recent Amazon catalog validation errors affecting books and media listings
What is Happening?
We have seen an increase in listing errors for a small percentage of books and media. For these items, you may notice an increase in the number of failed listings. These failures are typically in dicated by specific Amazon API error codes.
📝 Common Error Codes
The error codes reported by Amazon are typically as follows:
If you have noticed an increase in failed listings recently, this is likely the cause.
🔍 How to Check Error Codes
You can always check the actual error codes for any batch within the Feeds section, by clicking on the listings error report:
Why is This Happening?
🔎 Root Cause: Amazon Catalog Issue
Not a ScanLister problem: This is an issue with Amazon's catalog and is not caused by ScanLister or any other listing software.
System-wide validation failures: For the products that fail or have errors, even listing them directly on Seller Central is not successful. When you try to make a SKU for a p roduct that already exists on Amazon, the system automatically "validates" or checks the existing product details.
Missing or incorrect attributes: If there is something the system does not like, such as a missing or incorrect attribute, the system will fail the items and produce the erro r codes we are seeing.
How to Attempt to Fix These Listings
- Navigate to your drafts: Go into your Amazon account and navigate to Catalog, then Complete your drafts.
- Filter failed listings: Click on Submitted: Provide missing information to filter a list of your failed listings.
- Add missing attributes: Click Add missing attributes to view the information Amazon is requesting.
- Follow the prompts: Enter more info or continue to edit your draft as prompted by Amazon.

⚠️ Important Reminders
- Sometimes adding missing attributes works, but most of the time it does not.
- This issue affects products even when listing directly on Amazon Seller Central.
- The root cause is in Amazon's catalog system, not with listing software.
- If your edits are not successful, open a case with Amazon Seller Support to see if they can help you resolve it.
What Else Can Be Done?
Wait for Amazon to Fix
- Historical precedent: Last year around this time, this error was affecting as much as 10% of books and media products for some sellers.
- Eventually resolved: It was Amazon that fixed the root cause on their end.
- Good for: Sellers who can afford to wait for a system-wide fix.
Open Support Cases
- Test first: Verify the issue occurs even when listing directly on Amazon.
- Contact Amazon: Open support cases with Amazon to report the issue.
- Good for: Helping Amazon understand the scope of the problem and that it's not caused by third-party software.
Monitor for Updates
- Stay informed: Check for updates from ScanLister support.
- Watch for improvements: Monitor your error rates over time.
- Good for: All sellers affected by this issue.
What to Expect
⏱️ Timeline and Resolution
This is frustrating, but temporary: While this issue is certainly frustrating, we have seen this before and Amazon eventually resolved it.
We're monitoring: We will do our best to keep you updated on this issue if we have any additional information that may be helpful.
Help Amazon identify the scope: We strongly encourage you to take the time to open support cases with Amazon. Test first, but let them know this listing issue affects product s, even when trying to list directly on Amazon. This may help them to see that the issue is not caused by listing software like ScanLister.
Troubleshooting
Q: Is this caused by ScanLister?
A: No. This is an issue with Amazon's catalog validation system. The same errors occur even when attempting to list directly through Amazon Seller Central without any third-party software.
Q: Will adding missing attributes fix the problem?
A: Sometimes it helps, but unfortunately, most of the time it does not resolve the issue. The underlying problem is in Amazon's catalog data, not in the information you're providing.
Q: How long will this take to resolve?
A: Based on historical precedent, this type of issue typically requires Amazon to fix the root cause on their end. Last year, a similar issue took some time but was eventually resolved by Amazon. We will likely have to wait for a fix from Amazon.
Q: What should I do in the meantime?
A: We recommend opening support cases with Amazon (after testing to confirm the issue occurs with direct listing). This helps Amazon understand the scope of the problem and can potentially speed up resolution.
